Standing Up, Not Standing By - why the Borough Elections matter
Our message at the Borough Elections in Cheltenham on 5 May is clear:
Labour is standing up for you and Labour councillors are the best protection for our community and local services against the onslaught of Tory cuts.
The Tories’ austerity is a political choice not an economic necessity. The cuts are brutal and unnecessary.
When times are tough, the government squeezes the less well off while letting the richest avoid paying the taxes that the rest of us do.
Decisions taken at a local level impact us all; they shape the communities we live in, the transport we use, the housing that is built and jobs we need. But since George Osborne was handed the keys to the Treasury, funding for local government has been cut by nearly half.
Across the country, services are being salami-sliced and put under pressure to provide more with much less.
Labour is different, we will build and invest for an economy fit for the future, that is fair for all, and which works for all. It’s a fairer way, and it’s a better way.
Local government matters: the record of Labour councils across the country over the last few years - shows that a vote for Labour on 5 May is a vote for local government that will stand up for people, not stand by.
