I’ve been politically active on the left for 54 years and joined Labour after it adopted socialist policies. I’m passionate about defending the NHS, and opposing fascism and the ultra-right.

An archaeologist by profession, I research and I teach the history of medicine in the ancient world and healthcare policy at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford, where I am a Fellow. I previously held a number of senior posts in the Medical School at the University of Birmingham.

Before returning to academic life, I was a National Union of Public Employees full-time official, served as Vice-Chair of the TUC Regional Council; National Treasurer of the People’s March for Jobs, TUC Regional Solidarity Co-ordinator. I’ve also been a member of the National Council of CND.
