Thank you to all of you who came to our fantastic event on Thursday with Chris Williamson. He spoke to a packed house at Parklands and gave a compelling speech about where we have come from in the Labour party. Chris is well-know as an advocate of the reform and overhaul of Labour party democracy, and he described how the Labour Party would have been far more successful and true to itself in the past if it only listened to their members more.
The event was opened up to Gloucestershire CLPs and many came along, as well as members of the public. Questions included concerns about fracking, the devastating effects of uncontrolled global warming, and party democracy. Asked how he had coped with losing his seat in 2015, he ended by quoting Tony Benn who stressed how important are hope and anger, which seemed the perfect note to end a discussion that included climate change and Labour Party democracy!
On a more mundane note, we had a successful raffle where one of the prizes had been advertised the day before by Theresa May in parliament where she told a bare faced lie about the book ‘Economics for the Many’!
The whole event was also really motivating and inspiring. In Cheltenham we need to hear and believe that ‘ ‘there is no unwinnable seat’.
Finally, many thanks to our Political Education Officer, Frank Chacko, for organising the event, and to everyone who helped with arrangements.
