George Penny was selected to fight the General Election in Cheltenham for the Labour Party at a packed meeting of supporters on Friday evening. George was born and brought up in Cheltenham, attended Cleeve School and Pate’s Grammar School before reading law at the University of Oxford. He lives in the All Saints area of the town.

George said “It is a great honour to have been chosen to represent the Labour Party in my home town of Cheltenham. I’m ready and eager to campaign for Labour’s bold vision for a new deal for the people of Cheltenham and our country as a whole; the provision of a genuinely cradle-to-grave welfare state and the elimination of the evil of homelessness. I want to see essential services taken back into public hands and run in the interests of the people of this country. Finally, I want to see a robust and wide-ranging response to the climate crisis in the form of the Labour Party’s transformative Green Industrial Revolution.”

George will be campaigning full time in Cheltenham in the run up the General Election and highlighted the need to keep up the fight to protect all NHS services at Cheltenham General Hospital. He said, “We need to make sure that there is no downgrading of A&E services in Cheltenham, and that no other vital provision at our local hospital is threatened. Most importantly we need to reverse this government’s destructive policies towards the NHS and give our hospitals and GPs the funding that they so desperately require.”
